It had been almost three days since Amaryllis walked in to Finley Rockefellar's home, but it was all she had thought about ever since. It hadn't crossed her mind to go back or visit, especially since work had called her away while he was still sleeping and had kept her busy until the previous night when she finally worked herself in to a full power exhaustion. Healer Marrion had sent her home to sleep and rest for the day, but her father had other plans. As long as she didn't use her power, she was good to go, right?
That was how she ended up in one of the barns, tending to sick calves whose mothers had abandoned them. The feedings were tedious, but necessary to ensure the survival of the little ones. By noon she had made her way through almost half of the ones she had been assigned, so she decided to take a break to eat the lunch her mother sent with her that morning. Settling down on a bale of hay, she nibbled at the cheese for a moment before the door opened, revealing someone she definitely didn't want to see.
"hello Sam." she greeted cheerfully, hoping that by being nice he would decide to leave her alone. The way he grabbed her arm and drug her up to the hay loft, one hand over her mouth, let her know that just wasn't going to be the case. Something was stuffed in to her mouth, a rag if she had to guess, right before he threw her on to the hay covered floor. He didn't even speak to her before the blows came, and without her power she was completely defenseless.
Sam continued to hit her for what felt like an eternity, only stopping once to snarl something about Fin that she didn't quite understand. Finally, the barn door opened and he bolted, cursing about her father as he climbed down the ladder and leaving her in a heap on the floor. Unable to move, Amy simply laid there and cried, hoping her father would find her soon.

Fin had fallen asleep pretty quickly after the dresser incident three nights ago, the night Amaryllis stayed with him. He was feeling much better now, the cough was pretty much completely gone. This morning, he had decided it was about time that he start practicing his teleportation again. He didn't want any more incidents like the other night. He spent most of the morning, getting back into the swing of it, but it was a bit like riding a bike-it was easy to get to a good point.
During his practice he continued to think of Amy, and how she had taken such good care of him and how he had acted like such an idiot. She had left before he woke up, which he was relieved about. What on earth was he going to say when he saw her again? Sorry for keeping you up and making you babysit me? Well, it wasn't really his choice to have her there-at first, but he had asked her to stay.
He was getting frustrated with himself now. What must she think of him? She probably thought he was just as bad as those guys who tried to break her rule. He growled at himself, picturing her sweet face and feeling furious that he had behaved so immaturely.
Suddenly, he was outside a barn door. One he wasn't even looking at. Why was he brought here? The last thing he had thought of was her...
Amy, she must be inside. He had never been teleported like that before and frankly, it freaked him out. He was exhausted too, as if the teleportation to an unseen place had pulled all of his energy away. He leaned against the door of the barn and it opened. Somebody pushed passed him, but Fin didn't look up to see who it was. It wasn't her, after all.
He slipped into the barn and stopped, listening. He heard a slight whimper coming from somewhere and his blood started to boil as he followed the sound. Amy, was she hurt? He climbed up the ladder and finally saw her there, crumpled on the floor and crying.
"Am," he said, a half gasp as he moved to her side, sliding onto his knees to turn her over. There was a gag in her mouth and he quickly pulled it out, tossing it aside. She had early bruises forming on her face and arms. He felt his hands starting to shake has he lifted her onto his lap, leaning against the side of the barn.
"Amy, look at me," he said, his voice stern but clearly worried. He moved the hair out of her face and gently tapped her chin in his direction.

Her eyes were heavy and threatening to close when she heard someone coming up the ladder. Terror gripped her at the idea of Sam coming back to do something else, or worse, until a familiar voice said her name. "Fin." She whimpered, turning her head and trying to do as he asked. Guilt and shame coursed through her as she realized how weak she must have looked to someone like Fin. Amy hadn't even been able to defend herself from one guy she knew was a threat, while fin...she wanted to turn or run but her body was too exhausted to move as she laid in his arms.

She said his name, that was a good sign. "Amy who did this," he said, his voice stern and his hands still shaking. His entire body was tense and he was about ready to take off after that person right now. It must have been whoever had bumped into him on the way out. How long had this been happening? Ten, twenty minutes? Longer? He cursed under his breath for letting this happen, blaming himself for not being there to protect her.

"Sam." Amy choked out after a minute, her voice small. She didn't sound like herself, and that scared her almost as much as what happened. "the one I told you about last night. He...I don't understand. He was upset about something. I haven't even seen him in weeks." The words came slowly, and Amy wasn't even sure that they made sense. Finally letting her head fall back against Fin's shoulder, she closed her eyes and tried to calm her breathing. Freaking out wasn't going to do either of them any good.

Sam. The name burned in his mind, in his throat. He pushed past the fact that she said 'last night', for now, sure that she was just dazed. As she let her head relax into him, Fin wrapped his arms around her, pulling her even closer to him and completely onto his lap now. He rocked a little from side to side, "I'll deal with him later," he said through gritted teeth, leaning his head back against the wall for a short moment before looking back down at her again. His arms were wrapped around her shoulders and her back, but he was trying not to put too much pressure on her, he didn't know where the bruises were.
"I shouldn't have let this happen," he said, his voice choking up. Why didn't she use her ability against him again? He wanted to ask that, but he decided to give it another moment.

Amy burrowed her head in to his shoulder, closing her eyes as she laid there and listened to him talk. "it's not your fault." She mumbled in to his shirt, the tears starting to slow as the panic subsided. Fin's presence was reassuring, his arms wrapped around her. So what if it hurt a little from where the bruises were forming. Amy didn't want him to let go yet. She was still too scared to move. "It's his, and mine. If I hadn't worked myself in to power exhaustion I could've fought back, maybe." The last thing she wanted was for fin to blame himself for what had happened. He couldn't have known what Sam would do, or even that she was there.

Power exhaustion. So, they had something in common right now. He shook his head as he stopped the rocking motion. "Why didn't you get some rest? Have you been treating sick people for three days straight?" he asked, envisioning her sitting at the besides of the entire village, staying up all night every night. If he hadn't of gotten sick, maybe she could have gotten some rest a few nights ago rather then staying with him.

Of course he was still going down that path. This was Fin she was talking to, after all. "Everyone is sick, I had to. I slept in between houses, but it hit the younger kids and...they needed me there. I just need to cool it with the power and I'll be fine." Turning her face so she could look up at him, she opened her swollen eyes. Why did it have to be Fin who found her? She was grateful he was there, but it wasn't good for him. He was still recovering from being sick and looked exhausted himself.

He understood the need to help the kids out, no matter how tired he was he would have done the same thing. "I wish I had your power right now," he said, shaking his head again. He tightened his grip on her just for a little squeeze before loosening his grip, sighing. "We should probably do something to treat you though, right?" he said.
In an instant his mind flashed back to the games, back to the moment when Mayzie died. She was the fourteen year old girl who went into the games with him, and he grew protective over her fast, like he often did. She only lasted sixteen hours. He had gone off with the careers, he had told her before the games that this was the best option. She needed to get somewhere safe and hide and he would keep the careers off her path. The only problem was, he knew he had to win, so he knew she would have to die.
He was grateful that it didn't come down to him and her, otherwise he may not be here right now. He may have let her take him down. He was lucky, sadly lucky, however when he found her sixteen hours in. He held her just like this for a moment before she died in his arms her blood soaking into his clothes.
His body twitched a little, trying to pull himself out of the memory.

"I don't know. I guess we should find my dad or healer Marrion. I just, I don't feel safe going somewhere he would look for me." Sam had already followed her home and he knew where she worked. Even with Fin there, it felt dangerous, more so than she was comfortable with when her powers weren't working. The distant look on Fin's face concerned her, enough that she wiggled one of her arms out of his embrace to touch his face. "Fin? Are you okay?" Amy asked, concern coating her quiet voice.

Her hand on his face and her concerned tone helped him snap back into reality, and he nodded. "What? Oh," he said, looking down at her and trying to fake a smile, "fine." He thought to what they were previously discussing. It was true, her house and her job may not be the best places to go right now. "Maybe we should... we could just stare here, you could tell me what to do. If there is anything I can do," his sentence turned into a mutter. There was nothing he could do for Mayzie either. His brows furrowed, "sorry I'm... game stuff."

Amy shook her head and tried to sit up, grimacing as she did so. When that didn't work, she let herself relax back in to his arms. "I don't think anything is broken." She started, attempting to assess herself the best way she could. "Maybe a slight concussion and some bad bruising. I won't know until I start morning around, unless you can see something I can't." Her free hand came to rest against his shoulder instead of his face, as Amy realized she was being too forward. "I'm sorry Fin...I don't want you to...if this is bad for you, then maybe you should go look for my dad. He should be in one of the other barns and I'll be fine for a few minutes." Not that she wanted him to leave, but if it was causing him problems...we'll it would be better for him to go.

As she tried to sit up his eyes widen in worry, but he didn't move to stop her. He found himself relieved when she fell back in his arms though. He assessed her too, but agreed that nothing was broken. Suddenly she was apologizing to him, moving her hand from his face onto his shoulder. He looked down at her, shaking his head a little as she spoke. "No, no," he said. He shouldn't have brought up the games, that was stupid. He usually didn't, even if it was a really bad flashback, but for some reason he felt safe saying it around her, being honest about it. He hated that.
"I don't think anythings broken. And I'm not leaving you here to find your dad. We'll wait until you feel up to walking, then we'll go look together," he said, his voice was stern now almost like a doctor giving orders. Ha. Switched roles.

Amy was about to respond when the sound of the door opening stopped her. She froze and began to panic at the thought that Sam could be coming back and her hand gripped Fin's shirt tightly as loud, heavy footsteps echoed through the barn below them. "Fin..." She started, only to be cut off by someone climbing up the ladder a few feet away from them. Her worst fears were confirmed when she turned slightly in time to see Sam's head come over the ledge, smirking as he took them in. Even Fin's presence didn't seem to face him as she began to shake in his arms.
